I believe every person carries a story worth telling — and a spark just waiting to catch.
Whether co-hosting the Writing Works Wonders podcast, speaking on a stage, or deep in a manuscript, my mission is the same: helping you find the "inimitable spark" that brings your characters to life. I often say that writing dialogue feels like hosting a party with my characters. I’ve learned that the best stories happen when we stop micromanaging and let the characters take the wheel. Once, while enjoying a day of sunshine and writing, a character named Lo-Retta decided to toss a snake into the scene completely unannounced! It’s that kind of unpredictability that makes storytelling magic, and I love teaching others how to embrace those "happy accidents." (FYI — I had recently told my husband I’d never put a snake in my stories. Ha, little did I know…)
Celebrating the Craft
It is an honor to be recognized for the work I love. Alongside my co-host, Dr. Kathy King, I was humbled to accept the 2022 Vernon C. Henley Media Award for our podcast. In 2024, Amazon also featured "Writing Works Wonders" as a pivotal resource for authors during Women’s History Month—a testament to the incredible community of writers we’ve built together.
Let’s Create Something Unforgettable
From cozy mysteries and children’s books to transformative workshops and memoirs, I provide the tools and the "impetus" to help you forge narratives that stick with readers. I’m here to advocate for your voice and cheer you on as you navigate your own creative adventures.
A Note on How I Write
I’m often asked, “How do you write?” It’s a great question! I am legally blind, and my writing process is powered by screen-reading technology and the constant, incredible support of my guide dogs.
My journey as an author is deeply tied to these partners, each bringing a unique "animal wisdom" to my life. Before my current partner, Helix — a big, fabulous black lab—there was a whole cast of characters:
* Pearl, a petite black lab and a total lady, was my first guide and the perfect patient partner.
*Strider, a 70-pound yellow lab, was fast and focused (sometimes a bit too fast for the indoors!).
* Sanka, a golden retriever who sat as majestically as royalty and pranced like a horse.
* Gregg, an 80-pound black lab who was a total "dude," known for his moans, groans, and that "yayaya" talking sound.
* Raven, my "designer diva" shepherd, who vocalized her opinions and meticulously nibbled scalloped edges into my towels.
These relationships are the heartbeat of both my fiction and my nonfiction. They inspired “The Adventure of a Guide Dog Team” series and were the direct catalyst for my “Memoir Unleashed” course.
